The first novel written about riverine people in the vast arena of modern Bengali novels is Padma Nadir Majhi. It was published in 1936. The main theme of the novel Padma Nadir Majhi is the life of a village inhabited by fishermen. Everything here seems to be guided by the unerring direction of nature. The life of the people of the area adjacent to Ketupur on the banks of the Padma River, which is depicted here, is completely devoid of external relations. “There is no trace of the refined taste of educated nobility or high idealism in the life of this fishing village.” This is the most translated book among Manik Bandyopadhyay’s books. In the novel, the author has introduced Apurba Munsiana in depicting the life of a fisherman and the life of water and in characterizing the characters.
